And breathe...

Writer: angelilacyogaangelilacyoga

Focus on the breath (pranayama), is an essential element of any yoga practice. The way that we breathe influences our blood pressure, mood, and sleep. Over the course of a yoga session, connect breathing with the asanas.

Try Ujayyi breathing (Victorious or ocean breath) during your practice.

To do this, breathe in slowly and calmly through the mouth. On the outbreath, imagine blowing out the candles on a cake. Now close the mouth but still make the 'ahhhh' sound through the back of the mouth as you breathe out. This will create the sound of the ocean waves and helps us to focus on our movements or asana.

Some other reasons to practice Ujjayi breath beyond your yoga practice;

-Promotes relaxation

-Increases focus

-Regulates breathing

-Enhances physical practice

-Detoxifies the body

-Relieves stress and anxiety
